From scan to fabrication
GDS offers comprehensive 3D reverse engineering services for various industries — including agriculture, aerospace, toy manufacturing, automotive, architecture, medical, manufacturing, and construction. They can take physical parts with missing drawings or models and create precise digital versions, helping clients optimize designs, improve product quality, and reduce costs by reproducing or updating those parts.
If a client lacks drawings or 3D models for a part, GDS can scan and reverse engineer the part to produce new CAD files. This enables clients to continue manufacturing or improve designs of legacy components. GDS reconstructs the item digitally so it can be modified or reproduced, effectively filling the gap of missing documentation.
Yes. GDS not only recreates parts, but also helps optimize them. In agriculture, they might reverse engineer tractor components and use FEA (Finite Element Analysis) to optimize the design. In aerospace, they might incorporate CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) to refine an aircraft part after scanning it. Reverse engineering serves as a platform for further design enhancement.
GDS delivers in formats including IGES, SLDPRT, STEP, and STL, with typical tolerances of .005″ (0.127 mm) and tighter precision available when required. They ensure the model can be opened in common CAD programs such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and Inventor, aligned to the client’s existing workflow.
GDS offers tiered service levels: Level 1 delivers raw point cloud data only. Level 2 delivers registered and aligned scans. Level 3 provides a watertight STL ready for client modeling. Level 4 is full service — scanning plus a complete STEP or IGES model ready for fabrication, requiring no additional expertise from the client.
Clients with their own reverse engineering team or software may choose Level 1 or 2 — they receive high-quality scan data and handle modeling themselves. Clients without that capability choose Level 4, where GDS handles everything and delivers a finished model ready for immediate use. Intermediate levels suit those who want partial processing done.
At Level 4, GDS delivers files that are ready to go directly into fabrication — no client expertise required. All necessary alignment, noise reduction, and conversion to solid geometry is completed by GDS, so a fabricator can use the file immediately without additional conversion or remodeling work.
Yes. That is exactly what the tiered service levels are for. A client who can do CAD modeling but lacks scanning equipment might choose Level 2 or 3, where GDS handles scanning and basic processing. If the client also lacks modeling resources, they choose Level 4. GDS plugs into whichever parts of the workflow the client is not equipped to handle.
Agriculture: scanning tractor parts and optimizing via FEA. Aerospace: precision CMM scanning with CFD design optimization. Automotive: scanning aftermarket parts with CAE simulations. Medical: scanning implants and designing custom prosthetics via 3D printing. Construction: scan-to-BIM for building elements and clash detection. These examples illustrate GDS’s versatility across industries.
GDS provides specialized expertise, precision equipment, and broad format flexibility that most companies do not have in-house. Their cross-industry experience adds value through FEA and CFD integration during the process. Outsourcing to GDS frees internal engineers for other priorities while GDS delivers accurate, guaranteed results — particularly valuable for mission-critical or regulatory-standard parts.
